Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping some twin-centric content into the ol’ VCR.
Okay, I have deja vu. I know we were obsessed with the Olsen Twins, Tia and Tamara Mowry, and the Sprouse twins for the greater part of my childhood. But, friends, it looks like twins are once again in the limelight. And, this time, we’re choosing to go down the Lindsay Lohan path.
The likes of Lizzy Caplan are now playing good twin/bad twin, and I don’t exactly know how I feel about it. I’m not sure if it’s exploitative or cliche, but I can say the Dead Ringers series is definitely better than the movie.
I’ve chosen three examples for all of you today about recent twin content that’s, quite frankly, unhinged, but that’s showbiz, baby.
Echoes
In Echoes, Michelle Monaghan plays twins Leni and Gina who, um, casually and annually swap lives and meet up on their birthday to switch back. However, when one twin goes missing, it’s up to the other to deal with the aftermath.
This one is MESSY. It’s the silliest example on this list because the storyline completely unravels at the end, and I don’t think the ending is the haunting finale the creators were hoping for.
Jenna Hamilton called, and she wants her side braid back.
Dead Ringers
For those who aren’t familiar with the original Cronenberg movie, in this iteration of Dead Ringers Rachel Weisz plays twin gynecologists Elliot and Beverly Mantle who might be a little too close. After deciding to open their own birthing center and making both personal and professional strides, Elliot and Beverly’s codependency might prove to be their own demise.
Now, I said this one was good, but I never said it was normal. This one DEFINITELY isn’t for everyone, and I want to give some big CW/TWs for drug addiction and ab*s*, alcohol addiction and ab*s*, pregnancy, miscarriage, labor and delivery, and all things similar. There are some really graphic scenes that could be triggering.
*Takes drag off cigarette* I was in The Mummy for Christ’s sake.
Truth Be Told
In its premiere season Truth Be Told, Octavia Spencer plays Poppy Parnell, a reporter turned true crime podcaster, who believes a man she helped place behind bars as a teen might not be responsible for a murder after all. Lizzy Caplan plays the epitome of good twin/bad twin, but neither twin might be innocent.
I’m not gonna lie, I binged all three seasons over the course of a week. If you’re a fan of The Sinner or Pieces of Her, you’ll really dig this one. Additionally, it serves as a friendly reminder that Aaron Paul is one hell of an actor.
I’m fortunately not playing twins, Mr. White.
