Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping some of my favorite artsy movie moms into the ol’ VCR.
Last week, I got to see Josie and the Pussycats on the big screen for the first time in my life, and I was so excited that I binged some of my other favorite 2000s movies in preparation.
That’s when I started noticing a trope I hadn’t paid much attention to before: the artsy mom.
You know what I mean.
The mom who wears paint-covered overalls and makes her living as an artist.
Sometimes single, sometimes not, she has the tendency for big feelings and emotions, but loves her kids (and never stops, to quote Reba).
And, it got me thinking.
Who are some of my favorite artsy moms?
Surprisingly (but, also, not surprisingly), my favorite artsy moms distinctly reside in two genres: iconic 2000s movies and horror films.
I know, I know.
Before we even get there, yes, I’m aware that Delia Deetz is a stepmom, but I’d be remiss not to include her.
I’d also like to take this time to say RIP to Catherine O’Hara. I bawled when the news of her passing dropped because she was such a quintessential part of my childhood, and she’s one of my favorite actors of all time.
She meant a lot to people, and I hope she was aware of the impact she had. 🖤
Moving on.
Alrighty, that should do us for introductions and disclaimers.
Without further ado, here are five of my favorite artsy moms:
Helen Thermopolis from The Princess Diaries

Tori Breyer from Brightburn

Karen Cep from Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen

Delia Deetz from Beetlejuice and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice

Annie Graham from Hereditary
