Happy Valentine’s Day, Movie Mavens

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping one of our cheesy holiday letters into the ol’ VCR.

CW/TW: mentions of EDs, depression, abusive relationships, and all like topics

Look, I know Valentine’s Day is a divisive holiday.

I get it.

At its core, it’s supposed to be a day of love, be it romantic, platonic, or self-love.

However, like a lot of holidays, it’s become overrun by the spirit of consumerism.

Walmart put out Beavis and Butt-Head blow molds this year, for crying out loud.

It can also stir up a lot of negative feelings because love isn’t always pure; it can cut you like a knife.

Additionally, relationships can be harmful.

Believe me, as someone who grew up in a house with DV, I know first-hand what “love” can look like.

So, I’m not here to try to force you to change your mind on the concept of Valentine’s Day or love.

Really.

I can relate to the heartbreak because I’ve had my heart broken nine ways to Sunday, but I’ve never been in an abusive relationship, so I can’t (and won’t) discuss how hard this holiday can be for someone who has been.

Today might also be complicated because you’re estranged from loved ones, lost loved ones, etc…

My heart is still shattered from KP’s death, and she made every holiday special, so I still get a little misty-eyed in February.

It’s also sometimes really hard to love yourself because of depression, EDs, etc…

As someone who has depression and is in recovery for EDs, I’ve been there, and I’d be lying if I said there still weren’t times I didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin.

This is all a really long-winded way of saying that I fully understand why there are complicated feelings around Valentine’s Day.

But I also want to say this:

I love you, and you’re worthy of love.

I know it can be hard to believe, but it’s true.

You deserve to have people who love you, and you deserve to have people to love.

Tomorrow might be hard for a variety of reasons, but please be kind to yourself today.

If you don’t have anyone to celebrate with, do something nice for yourself.

Go for a walk. Paint your nails. Anything.

Just do something for yourself; nothing is too small.

You’re worth it.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Movie Mavens. 🖤
