My Favorite Movies Of 2023

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping my favorite movies of 2023 into the ol’ VCR.

Well, friends, as hard as it is to believe, it’s already time to kick off 2024. And you know what that means! It’s time to throw out my favorite movies of 2023.

A couple of things before we get started. I’ve created two categories: my favorite overall movies of 2023, and my favorite horror movies of 2023. There were a lot of horror movies I enjoyed, and I initially had two in my list of my ten favorite movies. However, I had to make the tough choice to bump No One Will Save You for Anatomy of a Fall, and I had to mention the former somewhere in this piece because I loved it so much.

Additionally, I know Talk to Me shows up on both lists. That just speaks to how good it is. Not only was it one of my favorite horror releases of the year, it was one of my favorite releases, period.

Lastly (for now, I have something else to bring up in the horror section), you’ll notice I say “my favorite” movies of the year vs “the top” movies of the year. This goes back to my famous disclaimer. Just because I loved these movies doesn’t mean everyone did, and just because there are movies I didn’t like doesn’t mean they’re bad. I think saying “my favorite” makes it clear that my list is subjective to my taste, which I know some of you will probably have thoughts about.

ALRIGHTY. I think that takes care of everything for now, so let’s go ahead and dive into my favorite movies (and horror movies) of 2023.

My 10 favorite movies of 2023

CW/TWs for movies on this list: addiction, SA, gore, r*pe, murder, parental loss, ab*s*, su*c*d*, and everything related to these topics.

My favorite movies for 2023, in no particular order, are:

  • Talk to Me
  • Saltburn
  • Barbie
  • Asteroid City
  • Anatomy of a Fall
  • Bottoms
  • Past Lives
  • Killers of the Flower Moon
  • Poor Things (although I don’t condone their use of the “r” word)
  • The Iron Claw

Honorable mentions

Dicks: The Musical and Theater Camp made me laugh the hardest outside of Bottoms, so I have to give them an honorable mention. Dicks: The Musical is so truly unhinged, and Theater Camp is just hysterical. I recommend watching both ASAP, with the disclaimer that Dicks: The Musical is more so for the girls and gays, and is chaotic AF.

My 20 favorite horror movies of 2023

I know some people have said that this year has been a disappointing year for horror. However, between the movies I saw, analog horror series like Greylock, Project Earth, and Midwest Angelica, and horror ARGs like Welcome Home, I personally ate well.

Without further ado, and in no particular order, here are my 20 (yes, 20) favorite horror movies of 2023:

  • The Sacrifice Game
  • Hell House LLC Origins: The Carmichael Manor
  • Talk to Me
  • No One Will Save You
  • Scream VI
  • Evil Dead Rise
  • M3GAN
  • Thanksgiving
  • There’s Something Wrong with the Children
  • The Boogeyman
  • Stalker
  • Run Rabbit Run
  • Brooklyn ‘45
  • Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls
  • Renfield
  • Val
  • Totally Killer
  • When Evil Lurks
  • HeBGB TV

Honorable mentions

I obviously loved Infinity Pool and Slotherhouse for different reasons. I think Infinity Pool shows that Brandon Cronenberg is starting to find his footing and break out of his father’s shadow while also blessing us with multiple photos of Mia Goth walking Alexander Skarsgård on a leash.

Slotherhouse is a blast and serves as a wonderful example of how traditional slashers can still provide a socially conscious message. It also doesn’t hurt that it reminds me so much of the SyFy original movies I grew up with as a kid.

We have so much to look forward to in 2024, and I can’t wait. In fact, I just updated our content calendar this morning. I update this puppy regularly, so be sure to bookmark the page and keep your eyes peeled for more releases. 👀
