Lost And Found Footage: Horror Mockumentaries And Fake Documentaries

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping horror mockumentaries into the ol’ VCR.

I feel like the phrase “mockumentary” has a comedic connotation, thanks in part to the wonderful Christopher Guest.

But, if we’re getting technical, “mockumentaries” are fake documentaries. Plus, portmanteaus are more fun. I digress.

I wanted to tap into the horror mockumentary space because I feel like there are some real gems within this subgenre. However, I will say, the line between found footage and mockumentary is blurred, so please don’t come for me.

Between my acid reflux and arthritic knee, the Blair Witch wouldn’t have even bothered snatching me.

Additionally, this was a HARD subgenre to narrow down for me. [Rec] was cut simply because I recently mentioned it in our zombie piece. The Paranormal Activity series felt too rooted in found footage to be on this list. I don’t like the original Cloverfield. See? We’re all making sacrifices.

I wanted to separate these mockumentaries into two categories: comedy and horror. I don’t know about you, but I feel like there’s a time for horror comedies and a time for regular horror movies; I don’t want you to be in the mood for one and wind up putting on the other. That’s why I split the list up by comedic horror mockumentaries and scary horror mockumentaries.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is listed on both because I just think it’s an excellent movie, and I believe it bridges the gap between the two.

Man, I love Salad Fingers.

Without further ado, here are 20 of my favorite horror mockumentaries (that are also teetering on found footage):
