Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping the work of Melissa Barrera into the ol’ VCR.
On July 4, 1990, Melissa Barrera Martinez was born in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico but you probably know her better as simply Melissa Barrera.
Melissa Barrera attended both Tisch (aka New York University Tisch School of the Arts) and the American School Foundation of Monterrey.
Like the subject of a lot of our spotlights, she also acted in many school productions over the years.
Melissa Barrera first appeared on television in 2011 in a Mexican singing reality show called La Academia. From there, she would go on to release an album as part of a duo called Melissa y Sebastian, and perform the theme song for the telenovela, Tanto amor.
When Melissa Barerra was attending Tisch, she appeared in her first film, L for Leisure, and a year later, she would appear in the telenovelas La mujer de Judas and La otra cara del alma.
She would then go on to star in the telenovelas Siempre tuya Acapulco in 2014 and Tanto amor in 2015.
In 2018, Melissa Barrera’s career in the US took off with lead roles in the show Vida (Life), followed by Scream (2022), and the film adaptation of In the Heights.
In 2023, Melissa Barrera would be fired from Scream 7 due to her advocacy for the Palestinian people during the ongoing genocide. I give Melissa major props because she has continued to speak up about the genocide, share links and resources, etc…
And, I think that’s extremely badass, especially considering the outcome of this election.
There’s not much more that I can say about Melissa Barrera that hasn’t already been said.
Melissa, if you ever read this, thank you. 🖤
Without further ado, here’s some of my favorite Melissa Barrera content:
- Abigail
- Scream VI
- Scream (2022)
- In the Heights
