  • Drawing A Blank #8: Holiday Animated Specials You May Have Forgotten About – Part One

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping holiday animated specials into the ol’ VCR.

Well, friends, it’s somehow already the holiday season.

I’ll give you a moment to scream into the void.

    Ready? Okay.

We all love Drawing a Blank around these parts, so I thought it would be fun to do a holiday edition where we talk about some of the animated holiday specials and episodes that you might have forgotten over the years.

If this is your first Drawing a Blank, welcome!

Let me give you a quick rundown:

Drawing a Blank is a series where I create a little ol’ curated list of cartoons that confirm you didn’t hop timelines (probably).

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions.

Without further ado, here are 10 holiday animated specials and episodes that’ll make you wish you could shake your 101 Dalmatians snow globe:

  • Side-Dish Cinema: Pairing Thanksgiving Foods With Movie Recommendations

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping movie recommendations to pair with your favorite Thanksgiving foods into the ol’ VCR.

I told y’all I had big ideas for this series. 👀

But, I’m getting ahead of myself.

First and foremost, I want to say how thankful I am for all of you, Movie Mavens.

I didn’t know what to expect when we started the B Movies Blog almost two years ago (EXCUSE ME?), and y’all have continued to show up time and time again.

Secondly, I know that we’re all scared and sad and angry about what’s to come next year and the years to come. I also know that a lot of you might be spending today with family members who…aren’t.

We used to have Thanksgiving at my late grandmother’s house, who was a Trump-supporting Southern Baptist, so believe me, I know.

Please do something nice for yourself today because I know how draining those conversations and gatherings can be.

And finally, I just want to say that I know the holidays are hard for a lot of people, but please know that you’re never alone. I’m gonna drop some resources at the end of this piece, and don’t feel ashamed or embarrassed to use them. I have. I’ll just be honest.

    Moving on.

Instead of a cheesy letter, I decided this year to throw out the second edition of Side-Dish Cinema and just make the introduction a cheesy letter (y’all know I couldn’t help myself).

As with the inaugural edition of Side-Dish Cinema, we’re pairing different foods and drinks with movie recommendations. And this time, we’re doing it with Thanksgiving foods.

Now, I know that everyone’s Thanksgiving looks different and not everyone celebrates. I TOTALLY hear you. I just decided to take some of the staples from my childhood.

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions and disclaimers.

Without further ado, please enjoy the second edition of Side-Dish Cinema:

  • “Hey Daytime Whiskey, Wanna Meet My CD Collection?”: Ranking All Of The Thanksgiving Episodes Of Bob’s Burgers

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping the Thanksgiving episodes of Bob’s Burgers into the ol’ VCR.

Before we get into today’s piece, I just wanted to remind everyone how, in the words of Bo Burnham, “the world is built with blood and genocide and exploitation,” including the atrocities committed against indigenous people

I know that this is just a silly little piece ranking the Thanksgiving episodes of Bob’s Burgers, but I would be remiss if I didn’t mention it.

    Moving on.

Fun Fact/No-So-Fun Fact: Arlen is allegedly inspired by several towns and suburbs around where I grew up…which tracks

As we all know, Bob’s Burgers has some of the most iconic Thanksgiving episodes of any series.

In fact, I binge watch all of them annually.

This year, I thought, in the true spirit of Thanksgiving, I would do something to make everyone argue and rank all 11 Thanksgiving episodes of Bob’s Burgers.

Now, before I share my list, I want to give a couple of disclaimers:

First and foremost, this is in no way commentary on the animation, writing, voice acting, etc…that goes into this series; I’m just ranking them based on my personal preference.

And remember, I’m just a silly goose who writes about pop culture on the internet.

Secondly, I do love all of these episodes, and I watch all of them every year. Again, I’m just doing a fun little ranking.

Alrighty, that should do us for disclaimers and introductions.

Without further ado, here’s my ranking of all 11 episodes of Bob’s Burgers

    11. “Now We’re Cooking with Gas”

    10. “Putts-giving”

    9. “Thanks-Hoarding”

    8. “Gayle Makin’ Bob Sled”

    7. “I Bob Your Pardon”

    6. “Stuck in the Kitchen with You”

    5. “The Quirkducers”

    4. “Turkey in a Can”

    3. “Diarrhea of a Poopy Kid”

    2. “An Indecent Thanksgiving Proposal”

    1. “Dawn of the Peck”

  • A Girl Can Stream #3: More Fake Streamer Movie Categories That Should Exist

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping more fictional streamer categories into the ol’ VCR.

    A Girl Can Stream?

    *takes drag off candy cigarette*

I haven’t heard that name in a long time.

In other words, that’s my very Baillee way of saying that we’re back with another edition of A Girl Can Stream.

If this is your first rodeo with this series, let me give you a quick primer:

Because of who I am as a person, a joke from @Midnight years ago stuck in my head, and now we do a version of it as a series where I create fictional streamer categories that should exist.

    Comedy!

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions.

Without further ado, here are 10 fake streamer categories that I believe should exist:

Movies where Russell Crowe is somehow involved with an exorcism

    • The Exorcism
    • The Pope’s Exorcist

Movies where Nicholas Hoult has an unhealthy relationship with a vampire

    • Renfield
    • Nosferatu (2025 – I’m assuming)

Shows where Robert Sheehan wisecracks and communes with the dead

    • Misfits
    • The Umbrella Academy

Movies where Tim Curry plays a flamboyant character with whom an eccentric woman is in love

Movies where Robert Pattinson plays a character with a tragic past

    • Twilight
    • The Batman

Movies where Anne Hathaway has a shitty and unsupportive boyfriend

Content where Nicole Kidman has a questionable accent

    • The Perfect Couple
    • Nine Perfect Strangers

Movies where Reese Witherspoon is really ambitious

Movies where something embarrassing happens to Cameron Diaz at a wedding

Movies where David Dastmalchian brings a malevolent force into the lives of others

  • “Daddy Is A State Of Mind”: A Spotlight On Pedro Pascal

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping the work of Pedro Pascal into the ol’ VCR.

On April 2, 1975, José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal was born…but you probably know him better as Daddy. Shit, I mean Pedro Pascal.

Pedro Pascal was born in Santiago, Chile, where his father was part of the Castilian-Basque aristocracy. A couple of years before he was born, the Chilean government was overthrown and became a dictatorship, so his parents were declared enemies of the state.

Pedro Pascal’s family received asylum in Denmark, later immigrating to the United States. He then lived in San Antonio, Texas before moving to Orange County, California.

Pedro Pascal went on to attend and graduate from the Orange County School of the Arts and then attended Tisch (aka NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts) and graduated in 1997.

His acting career started with appearances in shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Good Wife, but Pedro Pascal’s career had a rocky start.

He took a series of small jobs and would sometimes receive money from Sarah Paulson, who has been a close friend of Pedro Pascal’s for decades.

Pedro Pascal began to receive critical acclaim after his performance in the play, Orphans, and went so far as to win the Garland and Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards for his performance.

From there, Pedro Pascal would direct several plays including Killing Play and underneathmybed, as well as writing the play Flaca Loves Bone.

Then, in 2014, his career would finally hit the mainstream when he played Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones.

After his role on Game of Thrones, Pedro Pascal would go on to star in shows like Narcos, The Mandalorian, and The Last of Us, not to mention films like If Beale Street Could Talk, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and, most recently, Gladiator II.

In addition to all of his acting credits, I wanted to give Pedro Pascal a spotlight because of his outspoken support for the LGBTQIA+ community and unwavering support for his sister, Lux.

There’s not much more that I can say about Pedro Pascal that hasn’t already been said.

Pedro, if you ever read this, thank you. 🖤

Without further ado, here’s some of my favorite Pedro Pascal content:

  • Cooking Up Cuteness: A Glimpse Into The World Of Waffles + Mochi

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping Waffles + Mochi into the ol’ VCR.

Much like Nanalan’, I love Waffles + Mochi.

I was in a depressive episode a few years ago, and I was looking for something to help me get through it.

    That’s when I found Waffles + Mochi.

Waffles (who is part frozen waffle, part yeti) and her best friend Mochi (a ball of Mochi) are major foodies but live in a land with only frozen food.

However, when they get a job at Michelle Obama’s grocery store (the show was produced by the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground Productions, and they’re both executive producers as well), Waffles and Mochi get to travel across the world to meet chefs, try new foods, and learn about ingredients.

    TL;DR – it’s wholesome and precious.

Created by Jeremy Konner and Erika Thormahlen, Waffles + Mochi premiered on Netflix on March 16, 2021 with 10 episodes, followed by a spinoff show called Waffles + Mochi’s Restaurant where the pair opened their own restaurant, and a holiday special called Waffles + Mochi: Holiday Feast.

Both shows feature a variety of celebrity guests and chefs, including Kirby, Jack Black, and Rashida Jones.

I also want to shout-out Viva La Puppets, who made the puppets, because Waffles was designed to be able to actually “eat” the food she was trying. Michelle Zamora, Waffles’ puppeteer, would try the food as well so that she could authentically react to the tastings.

The only negative thing about Waffles + Mochi I can think of is that Sia does do one of the voices in the show, and with some of the ableist and controversial things she’s done in the past, I think the choice to cast her is questionable at best.

I know that Waffles + Mochi is technically a children’s show, but I think we need all the good things we can get right now.

If you need a break from all of the existential dread, hop in Waffles and Mochi’s magic shopping cart and learn to appreciate tomatoes.

And, you know, you can’t beat watching a Mochi puppet wear both goggles and reading glasses.

  • Hot Frosty Melts Away Toxic Masculinity And Makes You Want A Cold Shower

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping Hot Frosty into the ol’ VCR.

    Listen…

I was confident that I was going to hate this movie.

I was so confident, in fact, that I started writing jokes during the opening scene.

    For example:

“Part Jack Frost, part A Mom for Christmas, and part Life-Size, Hot Frosty is a full-on nightmare.”

    And

“Can someone PLEASE check in on Dustin Mulligan to make sure he’s okay? And also, maybe, touch his abs for me while you’re there?”

(Seriously, I don’t know what kind of Patrick Bateman-ass routine this man does in the morning, but MY GOD)

But, friends, in an absolutely insane turn of events, I actually…really enjoyed this movie.

I know. I’m just as surprised as you are.

I wound up getting so invested in this movie that I even FUCKING GOOGLED THE ENDING HALFWAY THROUGH, just to make sure this little mansicle made it out alive because I don’t think my heart could’ve taken it if he didn’t.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself.
For those unfamiliar, Hot Frosty tells the tale of Kathy (Lacey Chabert), a young widow who is gifted a scarf from the (clearly bisexual) couple who owns the local thrift store. The ice sculpture, who affectionately comes to be known as Jack (Dustin Mulligan), comes to life, where he reminds the town that kindness goes a long way, all while helping Kathy through her grief.

    Talk about ice sculpture 🤤

Based on this premise, you’re probably wondering how/why I enjoyed this movie so much.

    Let me explain.

Firstly, this movie is HORNY. Like, BLATANTLY HORNY.

As in, there’s a gag where Jack helps push a car out of the snow with more double entendres than a Sex and the City episode.

It’s not Sabrina Carpenter horny, but I’d put it close to A Bad Moms Christmas horny.

The ladies in this town need a Bellesa promo code STAT.

    I digress.

Secondly, and most surprisingly, I’m not mad about the writing.

I actually really like how Kathy’s character is written, and there’s a lot of good commentary about grief.

Kathy’s character isn’t helpless but is self-aware about her situation and communicates as much to Jack.

With how horny the rest of this movie is, I’m honestly proud of them for not making a rectal thermometer joke

Jack also isn’t some stereotypical Christmas leading man, either.

Jack’s written as a genuinely good dude who hypes up everyone in town, including Deputy Sheriff Ed Schatz (Joe Lo Truglio), when he confides in Jack that he doesn’t think he’s attractive.

There’s also that great little Mean Girls nod when Kathy says Lindsay Lohan looks like a girl she went to high school with. Y’all know I’m a SUCKER for a good Easter egg.

We also get a Pretty Woman montage ref.

There’s the extremely clever ATM footage plot point.

But, I do feel like there was the missed opportunity to make a Party of Five joke.

Kathy owned a cafe with a hostess stand, for crying out loud.

Thirdly, I don’t know whose idea it was to put Craig Robinson and Joe Lo Truglio together as our Rosencrantz and Guildenstern of sorts, but kudos.

    ACAB, though.

This ice sculpture is honestly giving, “We have Dustin Mulligan at home”

And finally, I love how this entire town is like, “Yeah, he’s a genuinely good guy, so we’re cool with him being a snowman.”

It’s…so crazy how this town just accepts Jack for who he is…

    These people were so welcoming…

And just accepted Jack being a snowman…

And didn’t seek to inflict hate or cruelty on someone different…

    That’s WILD.

Now, this obviously isn’t Oscar-worthy cinema by any means.

I’ve never heard the word “galoshes” used so many times in a movie.

Additionally, this movie brings me to the horrific realization that snow people are sentient and essentially suffer from locked-in syndrome?

That also begs the bigger question of whether or not they feel pain.

What an unsavory can of worms we’ve opened here.

What in the name of Twilight is this lighting, though?

Kathy’s husband’s medical charts also seem to have been written in a Comic Sans-esque font, which is troubling to say the least.

Additionally, Jack’s clothes all seem to have been ordered straight out of a Bongo catalog (which actually does make sense, knowing that all of his clothes were bought from the aforementioned bisexual* thrift store owners).

    * Disclaimer: this is me joking/speculating, so please don’t come for me when you watch this movie and it’s not an actual plot point.

Finally, I want to know how Jack learned to channel surf because the alternative is there’s some cat/cooking/vampire movie channel or streamer that I need to subscribe to.

All in all, Hot Frosty is the horny snowman movie we didn’t know we needed.

There are so many horrible things going on in the world, so, y’know what? Yeah, I’m gonna tell you to watch a movie where a traditionally good looking man is genuinely kind and is accepted by a town for being a snowman.

P.S. I put “get a hot girlfriend” on my 2025 goals, so if you see me putting scarves on inanimate Christmas decorations, no you didn’t.

  • Side-Dish Cinema: Pairing Hot Beverages With Movie Recommendations

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping movie recommendations to pair with your favorite hot beverages into the ol’ VCR.

    We’re so back.

Today, I would like to formally introduce you to a new series in the B Movies universe: Side-Dish Cinema.

Y’all LOVED the piece we did a while back where I recommended movies based on your astrological sign, and it got me thinking about how we could expand this idea.

    Then, everything fell into place.

And, that brings us to the inaugural entry of Side-Dish Cinema.

The weather is cooling down…kind of.

(Is the reality of global warming really sinking in for anyone else?)

That means that you’re more than likely sipping on your favorite hot seasonal beverage (or, if you’re a little rebel like me, slurping down a giant blended concoction while shivering).

Drink in hand, you pick up the remote and go to pick a movie.

    But what should you watch?

That’s where Side-Dish Cinema comes in.

I’ve carefully selected nine different drink options with three movie recommendations each to cultivate a specific vibe (and that vibe is definitely skewing toward holiday movies).

And don’t worry, I have so many entries of Side-Dish Cinema planned that you’ll basically be covered for every food and drink-type out there.

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions and disclaimers.

Without further ado, please enjoy the first edition of Side-Dish Cinema:

  • Great Scott!: Some Of My Favorite Time Travel Horror

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping some time travel horror movies into the ol’ VCR.

Man, I wish I could time travel.

I mean, I understand the concepts of timelines collapsing and how the tiniest of actions could cause catastrophic events, but still.

You could potentially stop devastating world events.

You could help a loved one get a diagnosis sooner.

You could stop yourself from begging for a chili bowl haircut as a kid.

    The possibilities are endless.

However, for some of our favorite horror heroes, time travel wasn’t just a possibility…it was required in order for them to learn a valuable lesson (or to find out that the woman you were living with was actually a serial killer).

That’s why I’ve assembled a list of six of my favorite time travel horror movies for us to live vicariously through.

And somehow, much to no one’s surprise, more than half of them are also dead mom movies?

    I don’t know why I’m like this, either…

…but I have a sneaking suspicion it has to do with the fact my mom is dead.

(KP would’ve laughed at that joke, so please feel free to laugh along with me)

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions and disclaimers.

Without further ado, here are six time travel horror movies that would make Bill and Ted say, “Excellent!”

  • “See Ya Later, Figments Of My Imagination.”: A Spotlight On Kirby

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping the work of Kirby into the ol’ VCR.

On October 23, 1987, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, or Kirby, was born.

I couldn’t find a lot about Kirby’s early life, outside growing up in London and having attended/performed in the Anna Scher Theatre.

Kirby’s career started with an appearance in an episode of Holby City, as well acting in a variety of short films.

Over the years, Kirby has appeared and/or starred in shows like Barry and Hacks, and movies like Silent Night and Cruella

She’s also one of those actors that I always get excited to see in the cast list.

There’s not much more that I can say about Kirby that hasn’t already been said.

Kirby, if you ever read this, thank you. 🖤

Without further ado, here’s some of my favorite Kirby content:

    • Love
    • Barry
    • Hacks
    • Cruella
    • Silent Night
    • The Good Place
    • Waffles + Mochi
