  • Girlie Pops And Bops: Some Of My Favorite Girl Power Anthems

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping some of my favorite girl power anthems into the ol’ VCR.

With International Women’s Month only a few days away, and everything currently happening in the world, I’ve decided that this month is Girl Power Month for B Movies.

Now, I do want to be clear about something up top:

Whenever I say “women,” that includes trans women. Full stop.

Additionally, we also want to celebrate our femme-presenting peeps.

    Moving on.

I know that it’s really hard to not feel hopeless right now. Truly.

So, I wanted to curate a list of some of my favorite Girl Power anthems to remind you that you’re a badass.

Listen, I don’t have all the answers, and I’ll openly admit that.

But, whenever I listen to these songs, I feel like I could punch through a brick wall, and I hope they give you that same feeling.

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions and disclaimers.

Without further ado, here are 10 of my favorite girl power anthems:

  • “I Want To Remember Everything. And I Want To Know Everything.”: A Spotlight On Michelle Trachtenberg

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping the work of Michelle Trachtenberg into the ol’ VCR.

On October 11, 1985, Michelle Trachtenberg was born.

She and her family lived in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn for the first few years of her life before moving to L.A.

Michelle Trachtenberg’s career started with commercial work before she landed roles in The Adventures of Pete & Pete and All My Children.

In 1997, she booked her first starring movie role in the film adaptation of Harriet the Spy with roles in Can’t Be Heaven and Inspector Gadget following closely behind.

From there, Michelle Trachtenberg went on to star in Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Dawn Summers, “sister” to the Slayer herself, while also appearing in movies like Eurotrip and shows like Six Feet Under.
Over the years, Michelle Trachtenberg would go on to play iconic roles in shows like Gossip Girl, music videos like Fall Out Boy’s “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race,” and movies like the 2006 remake of Black Christmas.

Tragically, Michelle Trachtenberg passed away at the age of 39 on February 26th.

If you don’t know, Harriet the Spy is one of the reasons I wanted to become a writer.

The Adventures of Pete & Pete is one of my favorite shows of all time.

Needless to say, I grew up watching Michelle Trachtenberg.

From Truth or Scare to 17 Again, and Figure It Out to House, I was always happy to see her on the screen.

I can’t imagine how much her death has impacted her loved ones, and my thoughts are truly with them.

    Michelle, thank you. 🖤

Without further ado, here’s some of my favorite Michelle Trachtenberg content:

  • Hey, I’m Bloggin’ Here!: Some Of My Favorite New York Movies

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping some of my favorite New York movies into the ol’ VCR.

I’ve wanted to go to New York (New York City, in particular) for a long time.

And yes, it’s partially because of Glee.

However, it’s also because of how New York was portrayed in pop culture.

For a small-town kid who’d never been more than a few hours away from home, New York was portrayed as this magical place where no matter how much money you made, you could somehow afford a nice apartment and cool clothes.

Now, as an adult, I understand that New York, like all places, has its flaws, and Monica’s apartment from Friends is so unreal, it’s funny.

But, whenever I revisit movies set in New York, I still get that same little sparkle in my eye I did when I was younger.

Now, let’s get down to the brass tax.

What am I classifying as a “New York movie?”

Honestly, this took a little bit to refine, but here’s the method behind my madness:

New York plays a role in these films, be it that the setting is almost a character and/or the setting is just prominent.

It also doesn’t just apply to New York City but the entire state.

    I don’t know if it’s a perfect system, but it’s how we’re rolling today.

Additionally, please check the CWs/TWs for some of the movies on this list and/or have a trusted person watch it first, especially when it comes to American Psycho.

And finally, you don’t need me to tell you how offensive Mickey Rooney’s character of Mr. Yunioshi is in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and we don’t condone it, whatsoever. Nor do we condone any other roles throughout these films that are offensive or the actions of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho.

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions and disclaimers.

Without further ado, here are 10 of my favorite New York movies:

  • Now On Holmes Video: Some Of My Favorite Murder Mystery/Whodunit Content

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping some of my favorite murder mystery/whodunit into the ol’ VCR.

Something about me? I LOVE a good murder mystery and/or whodunit.

I love playing games like Werewolf, and I’m a sucker for a good reveal.

In fact, if I had more time, I would 100% be one of those people who hosted regular murder mystery parties.

    I’m not kidding.

But, I also think that’s probably not the startling revelation I believe it is.

    Moving on.

I’m not sure if it goes back to watching Clue and The Thin Man series repeatedly when I was growing up or what, but I’m always down for a good mystery.

However, one thing I’ll never leave a mystery is our famous disclaimers and CWs/TWs.

First and foremost, check your CWs/TWs for these, especially Fire Walk With Me and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). Please don’t take the CWs/TWs for these lightly, and, as always, consider having a trusted person watch it first for you.

Secondly, I know that a couple of these probably live in the middle of the murder mystery/true crime movies Venn diagram, but I’m counting them as the former today.

And finally, I know that this list is a bit chaotic, but I wanted to give you a little bit of everything in today’s list.

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions and disclaimers.

Without further ado, here are 10 of my favorite pieces of murder mystery and/or whodunit content:

  • “Where Are We Going?”: A Spotlight On Sasheer Zamata

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping the work of Sasheer Zamata into the ol’ VCR.

On May 6, 1986, Sasheer Zamata was born in Okinawa, Japan.

She grew up in Indianapolis and graduated from the University of Virginia, where she helped start the well-known improv troupe, Amuse Bouche.

After graduating college, Sasheer Zamata moved to New York, where she became a regular performer at UCB, joined the cast of shows like Hey Girl, and acted in sketches in shows like Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell

Then, in 2014, she joined the cast of SNL for three seasons, being the first black woman cast on the show since 2007 (hey, uh, wtf?).

From there, Sasheer Zamata would go on to star in shows like At Home with Amy Sedaris, web series Pursuit of Sexiness, movies like I Feel Pretty, and lend her voice to an episode of BoJack Horseman, as well as the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast.

In 2020, she landed a starring role as the final girl in Spree, catapulting her career (which is/was so well-deserved).

Most recently, Sasheer Zamata starred in Agatha All Along as Jennifer Kale, where she (unsurprisingly) gave one hell of a performance.

Outside of being an amazing actor/writer/comedian and all-around talented human being, she’s also a celebrity ambassador for the ACLU, outspoken for women’s rights, and speaks out against racism, colorism, and discrimination.

In short, she’s a total badass.

There’s not much more that I can say about Sasheer Zamata that hasn’t already been said.

Sasheer, if you ever read this, thank you. 🖤

Without further ado, here’s some of my favorite Sasheer Zamata content:

    • Spree
    • Yoga Hosers
    • Tuca & Bertie
    • BoJack Horseman
    • Agatha All Along
    • Exploding Kittens
    • Muppets Haunted Mansion
  • A Girl Can Stream #5: Even More Fake Streamer Movie Categories That Should Exist

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping more fictional streamer categories into the ol’ VCR.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a new edition of A Girl Can Stream, so I figured it was about time.

If you’ve never had the pleasure (?) of reading this series, let me give you the scoop:

I’ve taken a joke from @Midnight about fake streamer categories and run with it for an entire series.

I probably enjoy it more than anyone else does, but sometimes, you just have to go for it, you know?

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions.

Without further ado, here are 10 fake streamer categories that I believe should exist:

Movies where John Saxon plays a rough-and-tumble cop, and that also feature an obscene phone call:

Netflix original movies that play “Lights On” by Maggie Rogers to signify a pivotal moment in the final act:

    • Tall Girl
    • Our Little Secret

Movies where Taissa Farmiga’s past catches up with her:

Movies where Kristen Stewart falls for someone with the skin of a killer:

Movies where Lucy Liu is part of an elite operation:

Movies where Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson work together for a common goal:

    • The Avengers
    • The Perfect Score

Movies where Joshua Jackson is enrolled in Meta 101:

Movies where Susan Sarandon lets her freak flag fly (and wears leather, to boot):

Content where Amanda Seyfried has a complicated relationship with her best friend:

Content where Brittany O’Grady has to fight the supernatural patriarchy:

  • “Get Away, You Clone Freak!”: Some Of My Favorite Body Swap Content

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping some of my favorite body swap content into the ol’ VCR.

    Let’s face it.

Every now and then, pop culture will go through a big body swap phase.

How the body swap presents itself might change, but they all follow the same basic recipe:

Two people who are foils swap bodies and either a) learn something about each other or b) the “good” guy vanquishes the “bad” guy to get their respective bodies back.

I’m not dissing this subgenre AT ALL, and I think there are a lot of good entries to highlight.

However, some don’t hold up well (The Hot Chick, Monkeybone, etc…).

I also want to clarify what I’m counting as body swap movies.

I know we have movies that are body swap adjacent like 17 Again and 13 Going on 30, but I’m leaving them out because they’re more so being aged up or down.

And, honestly, they open a horrifying can of worms about what happened to the consciousness of their older/younger selves while they were in their bodies.

Finally, I know that including Face/Off might be controversial, but I think it totally counts because they switch faces, lives, etc…

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions and disclaimers.

    Without further ado, here are six of my favorite body swap movies;

  • Drawing A Blank #9: Even(x7) More Cartoons You May Have Forgotten About

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping more cult-classic cartoons into the ol’ VCR.

Welcome to the first Drawing a Blank of 2025!

If this is your first time with this series, here’s the skinny:

Drawing a Blank is a series where I do a Jimmy Neutron-style Brain Blast to recall all of the cartoons I loved as a kid and then curate a list of some of the more obscure ones.

    That’s it!

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions.

Without further ado, here are 10 cult-classic cartoons that’ll make reach for your Dr. Pepper-flavored Lip Smackers (RIP):

  • There Goes The Neighborhood: Some Of My Favorite Neighbor Horror Movies

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping some of my favorite neighbor horror movies into the ol’ VCR.

I’m one of those people who doesn’t go out of my way to know my neighbors.

I don’t go to community events where I live, nor do I frequent the pool in the summer.

Don’t get me wrong—I’m friendly enough.

I say hello and make small talk.

    I pet their dogs.

I respond to my next-door neighbor whenever she texts me.

However, I don’t go around introducing myself when someone moves in because I sometimes get nervous and/or overwhelmed in social settings.

I’ve also seen one too many horror movies, which brings us to today’s piece.

    Smooth segue, right?

As always, I have a few disclaimers.

First and foremost, could it be argued that a few of these movies are either a) remakes or b) heavily inspired by Rear Window?

Totally! But, media influences other media, so just roll with it.

Secondly, I know the specific action of the neighbor(s) varies from movie to movie, but my thought process is/was that the overarching theme is “evil neighbors.”

Lastly, I left The Last House on the Left (1972) out because I’ve always mixed feelings about it.

But, that does remind me to tell y’all to be sure to research these movies before watching them and/or to have a trusted person watch them first.

Some of the CW/TWs for these movies include murder (including children), homophobia, SA/r*pe, and all like topics.

Please take care of yourselves and never feel obligated to watch any of the movies I recommend if they’re going to hurt you in any way. 🖤

Alrighty, that should do us for introductions and disclaimers.

Without further ado, here are 10 of my favorite neighbor horror movies:

  • “You Don’t Care About Feminism. Your Favorite Show Is Entourage!”: A Spotlight on Ayo Edebiri

Hello, Movie Mavens! Welcome back to the B Movies Blog. Today, we’re popping the work of Ayo Edebiri into the ol’ VCR.

On October 3, 1995, Ayo Edebiri was born.

She was raised in Dorchester and, like many of our spotlight subjects, participated in her school’s drama program.

When Ayo Edebiri was in the eighth grade, she became fascinated with comedy and got involved with Boston Latin School’s improv club.

After graduating high school, she attended NYU where she majored in dramatic writing and snagged an internship with UCB.

Ayo Edebiri booked her first acting gig in 2014 on an episode of Defectives, with her stand-up debut following shortly after.

She joined forces with Rachel Sennott for the webseries, Ayo and Rachel Are Single, and booked her first film role in the movie Shithouse in 2020.

Ayo Edebiri then joined the writing staff for shows like Sunnyside and Big Mouth before replacing Jenny Slate as a voice actor on the latter.

Additionally, she both wrote and acted in the second season of Dickinson and booked a supporting role in Hello, Goodbye and Everything In-Between.

Ayo Edebiri gained notoriety in 2022 from her role in The Bear, even snagging several awards and nominations. She also began writing and consulting on the series What We Do In The Shadows and earned a WGA nomination for writing the episode, “Private School,” which is one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.

From there, Ayo Edebiri’s career took off, and she continues to be an unstoppable force.

Ayo Edebiri has directed the “Napkins” episode of The Bear, starred in movies like Bottoms and Theater Camp, and has even lent her voice to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as April O’Neil.

There’s not much more that I can say about Ayo Edebiri that hasn’t already been said.

Ayo, if you ever read this, thank you. 🖤

Without further ado, here’s some of my favorite Ayo Edebiri content:
